What’s a MUFA? Why does it help with belly fat?

Is this for real? Can certain foods REALLY decrease belly fat? Is Guacamole a crime? What about Chocolate? All depends on what KIND for that one. But hey, if my 85% Lindt chocolate bars decrease my belly fat, I am ALL for it. And the nuts – make sure they are RAW vs. ROASTED (they lose their properties upon being roasted). Here it is:

A Diet Rich in MUFA’s (Mono Unsaturated Fatty Acid) Can Reduce Belly Fat:

Fat that accumulates around the abdomen increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Doctors recommend that people who are heavier in the midsection, reduce this area with diet and exercise.

According to a study that appeared in Diabetes Care, a journal published by the American Diabetes Association, a diet rich in monounsaturated fats (MUFA) may help reduce abdominal fat better than a carbohydrate rich diet.

When test subjects ate a carbohydrate enriched diet, they tended to accumulate fat in the abdomen. When they ate a diet that had more MUFA, abdominal fat concentration decreased, even without exercise.

What are some foods that are MUFA rich?

  • Dark Chocolate
  • Olives and Olive Oil
  • Flaxseed
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Almonds
  • Nuts and nut oils (peanut, walnut)
  • Seeds and seed oils (sesame, flaxseed)
  • Grape seed oil
  • Soybean oil
  • Avocados
  • Natural Peanut Butter
  • Macadamia Nuts
  • Pistachios
  • Walnuts

Which MUFAs are your favorite? Which will you eat to shrink the belly fat???
